The Reasons You Still Might Want to Watch the Stanley Cup Finals Pt. 2 – NJ Devils

So now that you know some reasons to pride yourselves in purple (if you didn’t read it, shame shame. Go back!), I’m gonna tell you some reasons you may want to rock the red and black. The Cup Finals start today which gives you just enough time to pick sides so without further ado, why the Devs might be more your style.

  • Big money reaps big rewards – Hey, remember two summers ago when everyone in the world but the Devils and Ilya Kovalchuk felt the latter’s 17 year, $102 million contract was crazier than Tim Thomas requesting a White House Tour from the Prez himself? Or how about Zach Parise being slapped with the “C” the day before the season started, following an unfortunate injury that left him playing only 11 games last season? That “C” was offered after the team brought him to arbitration and he finally agreed to a one-year $6 million contract. Well… those Benjamins are paying in dividends. Kovalchuk officially took over the scoring lead in the conference clinching game with 17 points. He also leads the league in playoff assists and looks to possibly be the biggest threat to Jonathan Quick and the Kings, only overshadowed by his captain. Parise seems to be hitting his pinnacle as his season (and possibly his career in a Devils uniform) nears its end. His offensive prowess is leading the way for the Devils and providing confidence for his rag tag band of brothers. His right may be signed away little more than a month from now, but he is focused on the black and red and remains loyal until the cup is hoisted.
  • Riding into the sunset can be glorious– Some joke that Martin Brodeur is one butterfly from death’s door but age ain’t nothin’ but a number for this iconic netminder. Ask today’s goalies who they idolized and who inspired them to put on the goalie pads, at least half will tell you Marty was the man. Throughout the season Brodeur proved to be inconsistent due to injury and natural inability to stay “on” for the entire 59 games that he played. As long as he remains healthy, expect to see the flashy goaltending style that has made him famous.
  • You never know what can happen – Having recently dethroned King Henrik and the Rangers and the Ginger Jesus and his Flyers in the series before, this team of Devils has done some unpredictable things. The upsets are what makes these finals all the greater and missing them would be a travesty for any hockey fan so whether you have each game mapped out on your calendar or you plan to wing it, tune into NBC Sports. I guarantee you won’t regret it.

About sunnyinnj

Female hockey fans are often referred to as "puck bunnies" and unfairly judged. As a female hockey fan with a desire to always learn more about the sport, I have an interest in any and all facets of the sport. I would like to write stories that appeal to female hockey fans who are not watching because the players are hot and look good in suits (that is a plus). My heart belongs to the Flyers but I have interest in players/teams all over the league. I know what it’s like being a new fan to the sport and having to hold your own with people who have been immersed in the game longer than I’ve been alive. Take a deep breath, it’s okay, we’ll get through this together. I don’t promise expertise, but I do hope to impart upon you my love for this “figure skating in a war zone” and create fans where there once weren’t and turn casual interest into all-out love. I am in this committed relationship with hockey and I do not foresee it ending anytime soon.
